Instead of Emile ‘The Destroyer’ Heskey, picture a young man with long-flowing locks gliding into the penalty area and putting away one of our many chances, this man was Mo finishing off the game, the stand-out performer whose fantastic hat-trick was worth it’s weight in gold was Seb, aided by yet another magical performance from Rick who got the Boca scoring started off within 10 minutes of the game kicking off.
It was the quarter-finals of the Division 2 Cup, hopes were high as our only chance of silverware this season hinged on the result of this cup tie. The sun was out in force during the day which even made me debate whether I needed my jacket while I sat and tweeted in the stands. With the game kicking off at 8 in the evening, I decided it was a good idea to wear my jacket as I’d be a little cold and how right I was. Anyways, enough about me, the League leaders were awaiting us in the tie of the round. Pippo, Sam, Crofo, Eliy, Nyall, Bear, Rick, Kow, Sene, Mo and Seb were the chosen men in this crunch match and kick-off ensued. It started off as a scrappy game and Sene soon found himself injured on the deck, he dusted himself off and it only seemed to be a 2 minute knock. No sooner had Sene got himself up and about that Boca had taken the lead. The ball was pinballed around in the middle of the park before falling for Rick who picked up the ball and ran at goal, the keeper rushed out to narrow his angle but our very own Christian Eriksen slotted the ball under the keeper’s body to make it 1-0. Boca began dominating the game after taking the lead and Seb found himself in the penalty area, he took one touch too many though and the defender recovered to clear for the corner. The resulting corner was a painful moment for one of the Calpe-ians, Bear miscontrolled the cross, as the ball fell to one of their player’s feet, Bear ran like a bit of a tank and flattened the poor fella. At first glance, the position of the guy’s leg looked horrendous but thankfully he was able to get up and walk away (albeit very gingerly) from the challenge, and Bear found himself in the book.
Boca’s domination didn’t waver despite the card to Bear and before long, we found ourselves 2-0 up. Kow had a driven shot which flew across the face of goal towards the corner flag. Mo chased the loose ball down and laid it off to Nyall who clipped in a beautiful cross for Seb to tap past the keeper who was badly positioned. 2-0 Boca and we were in dreamland. The Mons manager was forced into a substitution due to an injury and the fans couldn’t have wished for the script to be any better, Boca leading and Kuka, the Boca reject coming on. We had an injury of our own and the gaffer had to get Borge stripped and ready to come on for Kow who limped off. A goal saving last-man tackle from Sam spared Boca some blushes as that could have easily altered the course of the game. But our reliable back 4 and keeper were solid as ever.
Bosh got into the swing of things almost immediately after coming on and stormed down the right while beating their left winger to the ball, a slight miscontrol from the lad enabled the defender to recover and put the ball out for a corner. Rick was enjoying a fine game and found himself regularly crossing from both wings, he played a cracking ball from the left which eventually came to fruition. Their keeper came to catch the cross but flapped at it and Seb nudged the ball into the open net. Murmurs of ”the tie is over” were being heard in and around the Boca contingent, a controversial tweet or 2 also found it’s way onto the social media world. The less you know about it, the better! If you want to know more, I need to have my lawyer present! Mons had seemingly pressed the self-destruct button and as if being 3-0 down wasn’t bad enough, a horror tackle by Seb saw one of them retaliate and angrily kick out at Seb. He was punished with a yellow for the tackle but the Mons player was sent for an early bath. The half-time whistle blew and the unhappy Mons mood paled in comparison to Boca’s celebratory and happy one.
Someone had generously bought me my half-time pint and even the pints of beer whispered ‘great performance from the lads’. Can’t beat a complimentary drink. (No f***er bought me a drink, I only lied so I could use that very average joke) The half kicked off and Mons started slightly better and saw more of the ball with Phil being called into action to collect several crosses from wide areas. Mo was booked soon after for a accumulation of fouls, the ref seemingly lost patience after being lenient early on. Rick was doing that thing again where he’s really good and crossed from the left in the direction of Seb. Their keeper came charging out and missed the ball altogether, Seb back-heeled the resulting cross into the empty net and it was 4!! He completed his hat-trick and offered the fans a celebration to match.
Mo was working his socks off for the Boca cause and even at 4-0, he was everywhere on the pitch, he ran into space on the left side and held the ball up well to win a corner. The resulting corner was partially cleared and fell to Karlos who picked out Mo on the left side of the area, he took a touch and smashed it into the net. It was FIVE!!!!!!!!
With the game won, Bear was taken off to a rousing reception from the fans, he had the look of a man who didn’t quite know what was going on (his normal one some would say) but eventually walked off anyways. Sols was his replacement and he managed to get himself into the book within 8 minutes of coming on. Vinnie Jones eat your heart out! The moment we had all been waiting for was finally upon us too, Bill (new personalised boots et all) was stood next to the imaginary 4th official ready to come on and replace Karlos who had a fine game himself.
He enjoyed some nice link-up play with Seb and Rick up front but didn’t quite get the goal that we all craved for him to get, despite fouling their keeper while challenging for an aerial ball. As the game trickled into the 90th minutes, Mons finally had something to shout about, it was little consolation but one of the better goals in the match was scored by them. A player ran into the box without his run being tracked and he finished fantastically into the top corner, Phil could have stood on the post and had no chance of saving the shot. 5-1!
The referee finally brought the Mons’ misery to an end with 1 blow of his whistle and while they looked dejected, the Boca family celebrated a magnificent win in a game played in great spirits despite the red card. It was the perfect response to the Britannia derby defeat. We are now just 1 game from the final and another step closer to winning our first ever piece of silverware.
Choosing the Man of the Match in this sensational win was always going to be a tough task, with the back 4 solid as ever, Twitter votes went to Mo for running his heart out, scoring and turning provider too, Rick for being a constant thorn in the opposition’s backsides, scoring and also setting up 2. The masses on the social media website though, decided to award the MOTM sponsored this week by ‘Man United still being in the Champions League’ to Seb who scored a superb hat-trick and was involved in a lot of good that Boca produced. It seems unfair to single him out in what was a fantastic performance from all of the lads who were in the match-day squad, it gives us fresh hope for silverware as well as the League where we sit 9 points behind the leaders having played 2 games less than our rivals at the top. This 5-1 result hopefully sends shockwaves throughout the 2nd Division and hopefully makes people realise that even in the latter stages, we are still a force to be reckoned with in the battle for promotion.
Again, a massive thank you to Mrs Gaffer whose pictures smash it every single week. Check out our Instagram: bocajrsgib for more of these fantastic pictures!
